DIY Slat Coffee Table

Items you’ll need:

  • (2) 1x30in Round Pine Board
  • (2) 1x36in Round Pine Board
  • (5) 2×4 @ 13in-measure and cut to fit
  • (4) 1 1/4 x 3 inches for the legs (optional)
  • 1 1/2 inch Screws
  • 2 1/2 inch Screws
  • (2) 1x10x8ft cut into (62) 1×1 1/2×14 3/4in-measure and cut to fit

Tools & Material

  • Wood Filler
  • Wood Glue
  • Measuring Tape
  • Electric Sander (optional)
  • 120 or 220 grit Sandpaper
  • Table Saw
  • Miter Saw
  • Drill
  • Finish Nail Gun

I knew I wanted a round coffee table in this space. Wasn’t sure what I wanted but after doing a lot of research I found this inspiration photo below and wanted to mimic something just like it. So here’s how I did it.

How to make

Follow These Steps!

Step 1: Start with one of your 30 inch round board and screw with the 2 1/2in screws in your pre cut studs into the round board. You want to have at least on of your studs in the middle of the round board the the other four about 6-8 inches away from the edge of the round board. Try to have a stud on each side of the circle. This doesn’t have to be perfect because it is getting covered up but just need to be there for support.

Step 2: Next add your second 30 inch round board on top of the studs. So it feels a big stool. This can be a little tricky to make sure it lines up with your other round board. Just check your measurement 2-3 times before you start screwing the round board into the studs.

Step 3: Next you want to add your 36 inch round boards on top of the 30 in round boards. Make sure you glue the two round pieces together. Same thing here, you want to make sure everything is pretty square and centered. Screw your boards from the inside of the 30 inch round boards with the 1 1/2 inch screws.

Step 4: Now you want to add your slats in. Using your 1x10x8ft, cut them to 1 1/2 wide pieces with your table saw and cut at 14 3/4 inches for each slat. You may need to cut some a little bigger or smaller but you want to make sure they are a tight fit. You should have about 62 slats in total. We did one at a time, using wood glue on every piece and finish nailing two nails on the top and bottom into the 30in round board. Make sure you check your slats every so often to make sure they are straight up and down. Your last slat piece may need to be a little thinner than 1 1/2, which is ok because you will never see it being smaller than the other slats.

Step 5: After the slats are all in, it’s time to start filling the nail holes and sanding.

 

Step 6: Lastly, you want to stain and seal or paint your coffee table.
