DIY FAUX WOOD EXTERIOR DOORS

I’ve done this diy project a few times. I’m sure it won’t be my last. It’s actually a really beginner friendly project. All it requires is a little paint and stain. Nothing to difficult. If you’re afraid of messing up or not liking to color then you can always try again or try different colors to get the look you want.

I’ve only done this on fiberglass exterior doors but I’m sure you can do it on any type of door. I would suggest probably doing this project during the spring or fall. I have done it during the summer one time and it took forever for the gel stain to cure the right way. It kind of left the door tacky for a few days or so but it ended up fine in the end. It just cures better during the cooler weather.

Items you’ll need:

Tools & Materials:

  • Paint Brush
  • Paint Roller Brush 3/8″ nap or foam
  • Painters Tape
  • Rag or Disposable Rag

STEP by Step

Step 1:

You want to wipe your door down with a wet rag. Just to get any dirt to dust off the door. After the you can tape off your door hinges and hardware to avoid getting any paint or stain on it.

Step 2:

Next you want to paint your door. I know it’s scary seeing it in this orangey color but just trust me. One good coat should do it unless your door is a darker color then I would do two coats. It doesn’t have to be perfect because its going to get covered up with the stain anyways.

You want to let the paint completely dry for at least a couple hours or even until the next day.

Step 3 & 4:

Step 3- Now it time to get the gel stain out. You want to do a little section at a time. If you notice on your door, it has little panels and sections on the door. You want to paint on the gel stain, because it’s pretty thick, in the same direction on the panel. Once you apply the stain, depending on how light or dark you want it, start wiping off the stain with a rag or disposable rag. If your door doesn’t have a texture surface to it and is more smooth, wipe the stain in the same direction of the door panel section and maybe go back with he brush to give it that wood look.

This part can be trail and error but once you figure out the look you like and want to accomplish, it will be easy. Once you complete a section, start with another and repeat until the door is completely done.

Step 4- You want to leave you door cracked open to let the gel stain dry. I would let it dry for at least a couple hours, if not longer.
